Why Carson Wentz could be an option for the Tennessee Titans

The Colts gave up a 2021 third-round pick and a 2022 first-round pick for Wentz last March. There's no way they'll get that sort of compensation in return in 2022 if they attempt to deal Wentz.
Releasing Wentz would essentially be like throwing those two picks away. But that's reportedly an option that's on the table, which tells us the Colts are extremely serious about moving on from the former Pro-Bowl quarterback.
If Wentz becomes available, could he land with the Tennessee Titans?
My first reaction to the possibility of Wentz to the Tennessee Titans is that there's absolutely no way this is on the table.
Why would the Titans be interested in Wentz? They've already committed to Ryan Tannehill as their starter in 2022 (his salary cap situation makes it unlikely he's going anywhere even if the team wanted to move on from him).
And even if the Titans were looking for another quarterback, the answer wouldn't be Wentz. He's not an upgrade over Tannehill. In fact, his situation with the Colts is somewhat similar to Tannehill's situation with the Dolphins before he was traded to Tennessee. Wentz is a quarterback in need of (another) a fresh start to jumpstart his career.
If the Titans were going to go in a different direction at quarterback, they'd be looking to make a move like the Los Angeles Rams made when they traded for Matthew Stafford last year — an upgrade who can get the franchise to the Super Bowl (Aaron Rodgers, Russell Wilson type moves).
But maybe the Titans could be interested in Wentz as a backup to Tannehill?
Now that might be a scenario that could work. And it's something that former Titans safety/104.5 The Zone host Blaine Bishop, co-host of "Blaine and Mickey", mentioned on Monday as a possibility.
Bishop suggested that the Titans could be like a "rehab" for Wentz while providing insurance for Tannehill — and a little added motivation.
"If Tannehill goes through some hiccups, guess what? I got somebody who can actually push him," said Bishop on Monday. "Not to say he's going to beat him out, but you never know, these quarterbacks get hot and cold. Carson Wentz may could get hot."
"The guy shows he's tough — he played a lot last year banged up, hurt," added Bishop.
I'd be very surprised if Wentz ended up in Nashville. But I don't think it's something we can totally rule out — Titans general manager Jon Robinson has been known to make some bold moves. And having a top-tier backup quarterback is always a great idea (remember when the Philadelphia Eagles won the Super Bowl a few years ago….Wentz went 11-2 before he got hurt and Nick Foles led the franchise to a win in Super Bowl LII).
Of course, this all depends on Wentz's willingness to be a backup to Tannehill. Maybe he would view it as a situation where he can take a step back for a year and reset his value before signing a nice free-agent deal with a team after the 2022 season.
The only thing I know for sure is that it's going to be a wild offseason. But then again, isn't that every offseason in the NFL?
