Tennessee Vols head coach Josh Heupel is known throughout college football as someone who can get the most out of a quarterback.
Heupel has a lengthy resume that includes developing quarterbacks at a high level at various stops (Oklahoma, Missouri, and UCF).
This past season, Dillon Gabriel, under Heupel's guidance, passed for 3,570 yards, 32 touchdowns, and only four interceptions.
Gabriel is a former three-star recruit who was rated as the No. 758 overall player in the 2019 recruiting class.
It's safe to say that Heupel knows his stuff when it comes to what works and what doesn't work for a quarterback.
That's one reason why Heupel is extremely patient with quarterbacks. He knows that not every quarterback "gets it" at the same.
"Everyone has a different case, a different situation," said Heupel during an appearance this week on WMNL in Knoxville. "It depends on their football knowledge."
There's one thing, however, that Heupel practically demands from his quarterbacks.
Heupel expects his quarterbacks to be the first ones in the building and the last ones to leave.
If that's not the case for a quarterback, then it likely means they won't be starting for Heupel.
The quarterback has to be the leader of the team — on and off the field. It's understandable that Heupel is looking to his quarterbacks to set an example.
Fortunately for the Vols, Tennessee is in the midst of a tough quarterback battle, which likely means everyone is trying to get to the building as early as possible.
