Can you believe it? It's finally here.
We say it every single year, but it's because it's true: It's wild to think the NFL season will be officially underway once the Buffalo Bills and Los Angeles Rams kick off at 8:20 p.m ET tonight. The last six or seven months were long, but now it feels like they passed in the blink of an eye.
Emotion and retrospect aside, we couldn't have asked for a better matchup to start the season. Both teams feature some of the most talented rosters in the NFL and both are considered Super Bowl contenders.
So, let's add some more proverbial gas to the proverbial fire that is the excitement for tonight's matchup with some bold predictions.
1. There will be more combined sacks than touchdowns on Thursday night
For starters, it's Week 1, so there will be natural rust to shake off for both offenses. Granted, the last two years have seen some high-scoring affairs, but we aren't far removed from 2018 and 2019 where all four teams scored a combined 43 points throughout the two openers.
Going a bit deeper on the Bills' side of things – you have the same system, but a new offensive coordinator in Ken Dorsey. Will Dorsey and Josh Allen find an immediate groove or will there be some growing pains to work through? That will certainly come into play and I'm willing to take the growing pains side of things in this matchup.
And that's because of the Rams' defense, which is not only aggressive, but unique and complicated for quarterbacks to read. The defense will force Dorsey and Allen to get on the same page quickly and it'll be interesting to see how they respond.
And, of course, there's Aaron Donald and the pass rush, which is aided by a talented and ever-changing, always-disguised back end that buys Donald and co. enough time to get home, even when they don't win off the snap.
Allen has also been sacked three times in three of four career season-openers, so there's a history of him going down often in openers.
On the Rams' side of things, it's about the offensive line and the Bills front seven. Buffalo will be able to handle the lesser Rams front, but it will have to be smart about how it attacks the unit. Sean McVay will be more than happy to use any and all aggressiveness against itself, which leads to big plays and a less aggressive defense.
With Tre'Davious White out, that's the last thing you want if you're the Bills.
Overall, both pass rushes get the job done and in return, there will be more combined sacks from both teams than there will be combined touchdowns.
2. One of the Bills' rookie corners picks off Matthew Stafford
Yes, Stafford will target one -or both- of the Bills' rookie corners a lot, but he'll also get picked off at least once, as a result.
Per Pro Football Reference, Stafford has thrown 28 interceptions in 12 career games that weren't played on Sunday and 14 of those have come via Thursday night games. Granted, a lot of that was with the Detroit Lions. At the same time, however, Stafford certainly didn't play up to his top standard against the Seattle Seahawks last year on Thursday Night Football.

The Bills have liked what they've seen from Elam, overall, but Benford has been a big factor during the preseason. Both players will see the field in this game, which sets them up with a great opportunity to help their team pull off a huge win on the road.
History, plus an effective Bills pass rush and young, hungry corners will result in a rookie making a big play on a huge stage during their first NFL game.
3. Allen Robinson snags at least six passes and at least two receiving touchdowns
One great unknown about opening weekend is how teams plan on using the new pieces that were acquired over the offseason.
For the Rams, one of those guys is wide receiver Allen Robinson. The ninth-year player was considered one of the game's best up-and-coming receivers before a torn ACL and a stint with the Chicago Bears set him back.
The Bills are going to focus on Cooper Kupp, which is going to leave Robinson with a prime matchup against Dane Jackson and/or a rookie corner in either Kaiir Elam, Christian Benford, or both. Therefore, he's going to have a big night.
Robinson hasn't caught two touchdowns in a single game since December 2020, so this prediction is bold enough in that regard. But there's also a reason why six catches were chosen: Robinson has eight games with at least two receiving touchdowns over the course of his career. Seven of those games also have him recording at least six receptions, as well.
The Rams offense may not have the best night as a whole, but Robinson will ball out.
