Dak Prescott is the man behind center for the Dallas Cowboys. Who backs him up in 2022 is the topic of debate.
Cooper Rush, Will Grier, and Ben DiNucci are the three contenders for QB2. Rush and DiNucci have in-game experience with the Cowboys, while Grier has the highest ceiling of the three.
Rush has the win over the Vikings last season in his back pocket, but that does not appear to be enough to hold onto the backup position. That is because of what Will Grier has done in training camp and the preseason.
Will Grier on verge of winning QB2
The former third-round draft pick has impressed throughout training camp and in his first preseason game this August. Grier's arm talent is night and day compared to the other two contenders for the backup position. He can make the throws and can be a threat with his legs.
Grier missed the preseason opener with a groin injury. However, he saw action on Saturday night against the Chargers. In his 2022 preseason debut, Will Grier completed 6 of his 10 passes for 98 yards.
Those aren't eye-popping numbers, but Grier made throws that Rush and DiNucci simply can't. For instance, take a look at the throw he made to Brandon Smith:
Grier offers something that Rush and DiNucci do not: dynamic ability. He was a dynamic talent at West Virginia and has flashed some of that with the Cowboys.
He is willing to push the ball downfield and gives his receivers opportunities to make plays. That kind of upside is intriguing at the backup quarterback position.
By no means is Grier going to push Dak Prescott, but he does provide Dallas with a young and talented signal caller behind No. 4. It is becoming more evident that Will Grier is the right choice to be QB2 for the Dallas Cowboys in 2022.
