CBS Sports suggested this week that the Chicago Bears could make a blockbuster trade this summer.

The national sports media outlet named Chicago as one of the "logical" landing spots for San Francisco 49ers quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo.

From CBS Sports:

The Bears say they're all in on 2021 first-rounder Justin Fields, but the new regime doesn't seem particularly interested in giving him a supporting cast with which to grow in 2022. Their veteran No. 2, meanwhile, is ex-Saints backup Trevor Siemian, who's struggled to stay healthy even off the bench, and is due just $1.6 million in 2022. Adding Garoppolo, either via trade after a pay cut or following a release from San Francisco, would give Chicago more proven insurance. Jimmy G, on the other hand, might at least enjoy the homecoming, returning the area in which he was born, raised and played college ball.

This seems like a terrible idea, it makes very little sense, and I'd put the chances of it happening at less than one percent.

Chicago is in the middle of a massive rebuilding. Their actions — specifically, their decision to not give Justin Fields any added weapons this offseason — signal that they're not attempting to win the NFC North in 2022.

So why do they need insurance?

The Bears are going to give Fields a chance to be the guy. If he doesn't show major improvement in 2022, it will likely mean that Chicago has a high draft pick. At that point, they can decide if they want to draft a quarterback or continue with Fields. Why would the Bears give up valuable draft capital in a deal to acquire a quarterback that they may not need?

Based on what we've seen from general manager Ryan Poles this offseason, I think it seems fairly obvious that they wouldn't.

Garoppolo will eventually be traded. Maybe this summer. But it won't be to the Bears.
