The general consensus so far this offseason is that free-agent addition Mitch Trubisky will be the Pittsburgh Steelers' starting quarterback in week one while first-round draft pick Kenny Pickett will serve as the primary backup.

But what if the Steelers go out and make a trade for a veteran quarterback? Then what happens to the depth chart?

Seems too far-fetched to even consider, right?

That's what I thought, too.

But Pro Football Talk's Mike Florio thinks it's an idea the Steelers should explore.

On Sunday, Florio detailed 11 teams that should "make a run" at Cleveland Browns quarterback Baker Mayfield and he included Pittsburgh.

From PFT:

When the Steelers made quarterback Kenny Pickett the 20th overall pick in the draft, the door seemingly slammed on the possibility of Mayfield making a beeline to the ‘Burgh if he’s ultimately cut by the Browns. But with Pickett by all appearances not ready to play, isn’t Mayfield (if healthy) a better option than Mitch Trubisky? Mayfield definitely is. And while that would be an intriguing answer for 2022, it could throw a wrench in the plans for 2023, if the Steelers have a great year with Mayfield. Some would call that a good problem to have.

This is certainly an interesting suggestion. And it might not be a bad idea.

I tend to think Mayfield is a bit on the underrated side.

The Browns were 1-31 in the two years before Mayfield's arrival. In his first season with the team, he helped lead Cleveland to a 7-8-1 record (he went 6-7 as the starter). In 2020, Mayfield led the Browns to their first playoff win since 1994. This past season didn't go as well for Mayfield, but it's important to remember that he was battling injuries for most of the season.

Now, I don't think Mayfield is a Future Hall of Famer. He's not going to be a league MVP anytime soon. But I think he's a better option than Trubisky and Pickett (I can't assume Pickett is going to be a franchise quarterback before we even see him play in an NFL game).

Of course, it's doubtful that Cleveland would trade Mayfield within the division. They may have given up on him (though that may have been a mistake, considering Deshaun Watson is likely going to face a lengthy suspension), but they also know that he can be a dangerous quarterback. And I doubt they want to go up against him twice a year.

I'd say the likelihood of this scenario happening is less than one percent. But it's still an interesting idea from Florio that would make some sense if (behind closed doors) the Steelers are concerned about the quarterback position in 2022.
