Tyler Smith was not the most popular draft pick by the Dallas Cowboys. Through three games though, Smith has delivered on his first-round draft status.

Smith has made a smooth transition to left tackle after practicing at guard leading up to his rookie campaign. Not only has he been solid, but he has been impressive in three games outside a handful of mistakes.

He has proven to be a good run blocker with his size and strength. More impressively, Smith has looked the part as a pass protector, too. He has given up just one sack in 117 pass blocking snaps.

Not too shabby for a player that was described as a raw prospect coming out of Tulsa. Smith still has plenty of room to develop, but he has played much better than anticipated right out of the gate.

Cowboys being proven right

"He’s played better in each of the (first three) games," Cowboys head coach Mike McCarthy said during Tuesday's press conference. "I thought he played his best game so far.”

Smith has a rare combination of size, strength, and athleticism. He can overpower defensive linemen with his frame and force, while also having the ability to move well in space.

That athleticism and overall profile made him an intriguing prospect when he entered the draft. His natural ability points to a high ceiling as he continues to play more snaps in the NFL. His quick progression already is very encouraging.

Tyler Smith has not been perfect and isn't a finished product yet. He has made mistkaes and has been called for multiple penalties. Still, he has flashed the talent that caught the Cowboys' eye during the draft process.

The Dallas Cowboys trusted their evaluation and did not flinch when their time to pick arrived in the 2022 NFL Draft. Thus far, Tyler Smith has proven the Cowboys right.
