Although the NFL free agency period is just about to begin, we're already one month into the offseason. Dallas Cowboys fans have mostly been disappointed as the team has traded away Amari Cooper and could continue getting rid of starters in the next few days.
Oddsmakers seem to agree with the fans' sentiment.
Right after the Los Angeles Rams were crowned Super Bowl LVI Champions in February, the sports betting world had already moved on. After nearly $8 billion worth of bets in the biggest game of them all, it took less than one day for sportsbooks to publish the favorites to win Super Bowl LVII in 2023.
When they woke up the Monday after the Super Bowl, Cowboys fans likely were surprised at how high their team ranked. On February 14th, DraftKings ranked the favorites the following way:
- BUF Bills
- KC Chiefs
- LA Rams
- CIN Bengals
- DAL Cowboys
You're probably surprised by how high they initially ranked. A Top 5 team to win the Super Bowl? The second favorite to win the NFC? Over 25 years have gone by since the last time they were even in an NFC Championship Game.
A month later, oddsmakers aren't so bullish on the Cowboys anymore. This seems to be the result of two main factors.
First of all, the roster in Dallas is expected to take a step back in 2022. Even though there are salary cap-related explanations for the team's recent decision-making, it's difficult to argue they're a more talented team without Amari Cooper and La'el Collins (who's expected to be released or traded away).
The Cowboys might be thinking about the long-term future, and that's reasonable even if some – myself included – question the front office's strategy. But there's no denying that right now, they're not a better team.
Then there's what has happened outside of the organization. Right after the Super Bowl, Tom Brady was expected to remain retired (still can't believe he's back!). Aaron Rodgers' future was in the air. Rumors surrounded Russell Wilson.
But the dominoes have fallen and only one of those quarterbacks actually left the NFC.
The result? A drastic drop in the Dallas Cowboys' odds to win the NFC and the Super Bowl. They've gone from being the second favorite in the conference to being ranked fifth behind the Bucs, Packers, Rams, and even the 49ers.
This is the new Top 5, including odds, per DraftKings:
- BUF Bills +700
- TB Buccaneers +750
T-3. KC Chiefs +800
T-3. GB Packers +800
T-5. LA Rams +1200
T-5. DEN Broncos +1200
Overall, the Cowboys rank 8th in the NFL according to oddsmakers ahead of free agency. If their odds improve before the regular season, it will likely be through a strong NFL Draft given they are not known to be big spenders in free agency.
