There was some big NFL news on Wednesday that could potentially impact the Pittsburgh Steelers' future plans.
The Buffalo Bills signed wide receiver Stefon Diggs to a lucrative contract extension. The extension is worth $104 million over four years and includes $70 million in guaranteed money.
Diggs' deal is the third massive extension we've seen this offseason for a wide receiver.
Pro-Bowlers Davante Adams and Tyreek Hill each received rich extensions last month (after each was traded) that included $65 million and $72.2 million in guaranteed money, respectively.
Steelers wide receiver Diontae Johnson is entering the final season of his rookie contract, which means he's due for an extension as well. It's great timing for Johnson with the wide receiver market exploding over the last month.

Pittsburgh doesn't have a lot of options behind Johnson which is why he's a player they really need to find a way to keep.
But will the Steelers be willing to pay Johnson what it will take to keep him in Pittsburgh?
Johnson is coming off a career year in 2021 in which he caught 107 passes for 1,161 yards and eight touchdowns. That's similar to the type of season Diggs had in 2021 (though Diggs admittedly has a much longer track record of success than Johnson).
It wouldn't surprise me if Johnson looks for a deal similar to what Diggs and others have received this season.
Considering Johnson turns 26 this summer (meaning he'll be 27 when his second NFL contract kicks in), I could see the Steelers deciding they just aren't comfortable paying that type of money for a former third-round pick.
I don't think it's any sort of foregone conclusion that Pittsburgh will trade Johnson. But I think it's at least on the radar.
There could be a scenario where the Steelers alter their draft plan in 2022 to accommodate for the potential departure of Johnson after the 2022 season.
Maybe the Steelers take a wide receiver at No. 20 overall — there are several solid options in that range, including Alabama wide receiver Jameson Williams, who will need some time to recover from a torn ACL suffered in January (but he might be the best overall wide receiver in the draft).
Pittsburgh could then place the franchise tag on Johnson after the 2022 season and trade him (much like the Green Bay Packers did with Adams). Or they could let Johnson play on the tag in 2023 (though he might hold out if that's the case).
There are several avenues the Steelers could take. And it's unclear what they're thinking right now, but I'm sure they saw Diggs' deal on Wednesday and realized it made Johnson that much harder to keep in Pittsburgh.
