Ladies and gentlemen, we have a good ol' fashioned source-off.
Pat McAfee broke the news of Aaron Rodgers' return to Green Bay on his show, The Pat McAfee Show, Tuesday morning, ending the seemingly-never ending will-he-or-won't-he saga that encompassed the news cycle over the last few days.
McAfee and Rodgers are obviously close and McAfee did a great job delivering the message. Not long after, NFL Network's Ian Rapoport tweeted out the contract details. Per Rapoport, the deal is a four-year deal, $200 million contract extension with a little over $153 million guaranteed.
McAfee then fired back with a tweet that simply said "This is false." And he replied to his news-breaking tweet on his own counting saying "News of a “4 year $200,000,000 Million deal” is not accurate… according to my sources 🤷🏼♂️".
Uh oh. Even the best of the best can get got from time to time. But did Rapoport get got or is McAfee simply sticking up for his guy?
And why would McAfee need to stick up for Rodgers in this situation? It's because Rodgers explicitly denied Diana Russini's report from a few weeks ago saying he was looking to be the league's highest-paid player, which included a contract extension worth around $50 million per year.
"$50 mil a year?" a surprised Rich Eisen asked during the interview in which Russini spoke on the matter. "That's what he's looking for? Right now?"
"That's what I was told," replied Russini. "That's around the number he's looking for, per year."
"Categorically false" is what McAfee said Rodgers himself told him, via text, the very next day.
Boy, that did that start a fire. Many people, most notably former teammate Greg Jennings, went after Rodgers for being "selfish" and a "bad teammate" since he wanted that much money.
And guess what? Rodgers' contract is worth exactly $50 million per year. Four years. $200 million.
It doesn't get more on the nose than that. However, McAfee is definitely tied into the situation, so his insight shouldn't be taken lightly.
Who will be right, at the end of the day? Who knows. Only time will tell. But we will get an answer sooner or later, because the contract details always get leaked.
