The Chicago Bears need to thank the Dallas Cowboys.

Because it appears the Cowboys may have just handed the Bears a massive gift.

ESPN's Adam Schefter reported on Friday morning that Dallas plans to release wide receiver Amari Cooper before the start of the new league year.

This is obviously a cost-saving move by the Cowboys.

And it gives the Bears a huge opportunity to give quarterback Justin Fields an elite weapon.

Chicago needs to add another wide receiver to the roster this offseason. Allen Robinson is almost certainly leaving in free agency. That leaves Darnell Mooney as the lone wide receiver that Chicago can "count on".

Mooney is talented and has the potential to be a star in the NFL. But the Bears still need another wide receiver. Cooper would be a perfect option.

Cowboys owner Jerry Jones seemed to grow disgruntled with Cooper last season because he wasn't producing at an elite level. Cooper, who will turn 28 this summer, caught just 68 passes for 865 yards this past season. The former Alabama standout had back-to-back seasons with more than 1,100 receiving yards the previous two seasons.

Cooper certainly didn't play up to his contract, but those numbers are a bit misleading.

Dallas quarterback Dak Prescott was much better with Cooper on the field. And it wasn't even close.

The Cowboys finished the 2021 season with the No. 1 scoring offense in the NFL. So, doesn't that mean Cooper did his job? Maybe he didn't lead the league in receiving yards, but his team was better because of his presence on the field.

Chicago is hoping Fields can prove he's an elite quarterback in 2022. Pairing him with a wide receiver who has a positive impact on the quarterbacks he plays with would be a brilliant move.

The Bears should strongly consider bringing Cooper to Chicago. He could help Fields' development while also getting a fresh start.

Plus, Cooper would get a shot at some revenge against the Cowboys in Dallas in 2022.

That would make for some compelling television.
