The state of the Dallas Cowboys wide receiver group is up in the air. As it stands today, Michael Gallup, Cedrick Wilson, Malik Turner and Noah Brown are all unrestricted free agents. Throw in Amari Cooper's uncertain future on the team and that leaves the team with only two receivers on the active roster: CeeDee Lamb and Simi Fehoko.

What started off as arguably the best receiver core in the NFL may be done before it ever really got started.

With free agency around the corner, and the draft coming in April, wide receiver has become a bigger need on this team.

At first glance, this year's group of wide receivers isn't as deep as what it's been in the past two drafts. So, Dallas would be wise to dip its toes in the free agency pool. If the Jones' don't want to pay for someone like Juju Smith-Schuster, who's shown a desire to play in Dallas, there might still be affordable options out there.

In the case of Jakobi Meyers, he might be the best receiver you've never heard of.

Especially in the slot.

Meyers has now played three seasons in the NFL, but he didn't score a touchdown until last year, which was his first season as a full-time starter.

In 2021, Meyers was targeted more than any other Patriot – 51 times more than the next player. This is understandable, considering the offensive game plan for rookie quarterback Mac Jones was to get the ball out as soon as possible. More often than not, that would be his man in the slot.

Meyers only averaged seven-yards per target, but earned 3.5 yards after the catch on every reception. In perspective, that would tie Cedrick Wilson for third-best among qualifying receivers on the Cowboys.

A good thing to remember regarding Meyers is that he's a restricted free agent. Assuming the two sides can't agree on a deal, he could be tendered. Meaning New England has the right to offer a 1-year deal with right of first refusal. So Meyers would be free to seek a deal with the Dallas Cowboys. But, the Patriots have the right to match.

Depending on how the Patriots want to approach this, Meyers could cost anywhere from $2.43 million to $5.562 million. And those numbers could go up if Dallas wants to try and outbid the Patriots. A Cowboys first- or second-round pick could be included with that price tag, too.

There are too many questions around what was a strength of this team. Adding a player with the combination of route technique for Dak Prescott needs to be considered. The only thing that could stand in the way would be what his value actually is.
