How the Pittsburgh Steelers could end up with the steal of the 2022 NFL Draft

The Pittsburgh Steelers have the No. 20 overall pick in the 2022 NFL Draft and they're expected to target either a quarterback, a defensive lineman, or an offensive lineman.
When teams pick at No. 20, they usually have to go with a "best player available" approach while also prioritizing team needs. For example, Pittsburgh might have offensive line as a bigger need, but there might be a defensive lineman who grades higher that's available when they pick. The wise move would be to go with the better player.
Essentially, the Steelers' draft strategy will be largely dependent on what other teams do in front of them.
But what if I told you that the choices of other teams could lead to the Steelers landing the steal of the draft? The only problem is that it would be a position other than quarterback, offensive line, or defensive line.
It appears there's a chance that LSU cornerback Derek Stingley Jr could fall in the draft and possibly make it to the Steelers.
Stingley had one of the best defensive seasons we've ever seen from a true freshman in 2019 at LSU.
The Baton Rouge native had the highest coverage grade in the nation as a true freshman.
Stingley proved in 2019 that he's a bonafide shutdown cornerback. He has elite speed and elite man-coverage skills. There were draft analysts who felt he would've been a top 10 pick as a true freshman. His only real weakness is that he's not a great tackler.
And then there are the injury issues. That's why he might fall in the draft.
Stingley missed three games in 2020 due to nagging injuries. He then missed 10 games in 2021 due to a foot injury (later determined to be a Lisfranc injury).
If a team is going to use a top-five pick on a player, they usually don't want any question marks attached to that pick. That's the issue with Stingley. Will he be the 2019 version of himself after recovering from his injury? Or was that the peak of his career and he's now destined to be an oft-injured player with elite potential?
That's the gamble that a team is taking if they take Stingley. But if the Steelers have the chance to take the former LSU standout at No. 20, I think it's worth the gamble — even though it's not a top need (though it's still a need, as Joe Haden could depart in free agency). We saw enough from Stingley in 2019 to know that this is a truly special player.
A true shutdown corner is about as rare as an elite quarterback. If you have the chance to land one, you better not take a pass.
If Pittsburgh lands Stingley, it will absolutely be the biggest steal of the 2022 NFL Draft. And it would make an elite defense even better.
