KANSAS CITY – It is very easy to take pre-season power rankings, and run with them. But hey, it's all in fun, right?

The Chiefs have oftentimes found themselves at the top of those rankings. At least, in the last five years or so.

Kansas City is a powerhouse, evidenced by the fact they have found themselves competing for a Super Bowl for the last 3-4 years. This year is no different, as many football news outlets are projecting the Chiefs to be a very complete team.

With changes to the offense, including losing one of the best receivers in the game, and changes to the defense, losing one of the best safeties, they have still found a way into the minds of football analysts, as one of the league's best.

Chiefs sits at No. 4 in PFF's power rankings

Pro Football Focus is either highly respected by fans, or highly disrespected by fans. However, they do have some great football minds over there. Sam Monson is one of them, for a few reasons.

One reason Monson is considered a great football mind is because he has takes like this, every year. He does not try to make the splashy headline by saying something outrageous, but instead what should be said.

Monson has the Chiefs ranked as the fourth-best team coming into the season, which is fair. Had they not lost a few pieces they could be higher. However, you could say the Chiefs got better with this off-season.

Monson on his decision to have KC at No. 4:

"With the rest of the NFL’s contenders in an arms race, the Chiefs chose to trade away one of the most potent weapons in the NFL in Tyreek Hill. They look to replace him not with anyone player but in the aggregate with the Marquez Valdes-Scantling, JuJu Smith-Schuster, and Skyy Moore additions, and while that may be the best thing for the long-term cap health of the roster, it’s tough to argue that the Chiefs won’t take a small step backward initially. Nonetheless, as long as Patrick Mahomes is the quarterback, the Chiefs will be amongst the real contenders."-Pro Football Focus' Sam Monson.

The last line is what all Chiefs fans should hold on to. Patrick Mahomes is still the quarterback, and he is still one of the best in the league. We have seen him do things that have not been done. Now with the additions on both sides, rookie or vets, maybe he can reach that next step, again.

A fourth-ranked team coming into the season is a good place to be in. Using absolute thinking, it means the Chiefs would be in the AFC Championship if things play out like Monson envisions.

However, it's important to take things like this with a grain of salt. There is still a whole season left to be played. It isn't even September yet.
