Jayron Kearse signed with the Dallas Cowboys last offseason. The acquisition was met with little, if any, fanfare.
Kearse had a solid four-year career with the Minnesota Vikings prior to a modest one season with the Detroit Lions. Dallas inked the veteran defensive back to a one-year deal, and many believed Kearse would primarily make his impact on special teams.
Instead, Kearse emerged as an important contributor on a Cowboys defense that played well above preseason expectations. The Clemson Tigers product became a tight end eraser in coverage and fit in perfectly with what Dan Quinn wanted him to do.
Kearse played multiple roles in the defense, and Quinn utilized his talents excellently. Now, Kearse has an opportunity to take advantage of his strong 2021 campaign and cash-in this offseason.
However, the Dallas Cowboys must make it a priority to keep the safety in the building.
WHY KEARSE IS IMPORTANT TO COWBOYS
For one, Dallas is very thin at the position. Donovan Wilson is the only safety currently signed under contract. That immediately makes it a glaring hole. Kearse, Malik Hooker, and Damontae Kazee all inked one-year deals last offseason.
Dallas could theoretically draft a safety — such as Dax Hill from Michigan — to ease some concerns, but the front office has been hesitant when investing premium resources at that spot. Therefore, that route seems unlikely.
Furthermore, Kearse proved to be the heart and soul of the defense last season. A vocal leader, Kearse was often seen firing up the defense before and during games. He quickly earned the respect of his peers in the locker room.
It doesn't hurt that he seems to have a strong relationship with Quinn, either. The two appeared as a perfect match in Year One together. With Quinn returning as coordinator, the chances of Kearse remaining in the DFW have gone up.
When combining Kearse's play in Quinn's scheme, the respect that he has earned in the locker room, and the lack of depth at safety, it only makes sense for the Dallas Cowboys to prioritize Jayron Kearse in free agency.
