Safety Markquese Bell has already made a name for himself in the Cowboys community without taking a single snap. His athleticism, speed, and hitting ability will be a welcomed addition to the safety position that already has Jayron Kearse, Malik Hooker, and Donovan Wilson.
Bell will have to cut his teeth on special teams, which he's already mentioned that he's willing to do. However, once he's on the field defensively, Bell could experiment with another position, linebacker.
Cowboys defensive coordinator Dan Quinn recently spoke about Bell and what his role could be for the team this season.
"Colleges are sometimes more versatile or less versatile. Sometimes you put guys in different spots and sometimes you find, 'OK, what are the best things that he would do in our system?'" Quinn recently said in an interview. "And I try to always be really clear on that, when I'm looking at somebody to say, 'Alright, what would he do here?'.
"For instance, when I looked at Markquese [Bell], I asked, 'What would he look like at linebacker? What would he look like down in the box?'. So… I had him meet as a linebacker for that day because I saw the hitting and the contact. So, I try to always make sure the vision is there for the player. Because, sometimes when a guy gets here, they're not quite sure what the vision is."
That's certainly an interesting nugget by Quinn. Bell can do similar things on the field that Kearse can. In 2021, Kearse was excellent in coverage against tight ends for the Cowboys and held his own against guys like Travis Kelce and George Kittle, arguably the two best at the position.
Presuming Bell makes the roster, which many believe he will, he'll have to show the ability to come down in the linebacker spot and be productive in training camp and during the preseason. If he can, it would add depth at linebacker which the Cowboys need seeing as Micah Parsons is the only sure thing at the position at the moment.
This would allow Parsons to rush the passer more and let Jabril Cox and Bell handle coverage duties on passing downs with Kearse and Hooker holding down the back end at safety.
The Cowboys have viable options to add depth at linebacker on the open market such as Anthony Barr and Kwon Alexander that wouldn't require an undrafted free agent safety like Bell to step into that role. However, even if one them is brought in if Bell shows he's capable of being a hybrid type player, which Quinn likes, it just makes the roster that much stronger.
As the Cowboys head into OTAs next week, this is something to keep an eye on.
