The Dallas Cowboys are expected to release wide receiver Amari Cooper by late next week.
But before they release him, they're going to do their best to find a trade partner.
The Chicago Bears are a team that would make sense as a trade partner. Chicago badly needs wider receiver help. Allen Robinson is expected to depart in free agency, leaving Darnell Mooney as the team's only starting wide receiver.
Cooper would be a great fit for the Bears and he's definitely a player the franchise should attempt to acquire.
And it would only cost Chicago a third-round or fourth-round pick, according to NFL reporter Jordan Schultz.
But why would Chicago trade for him if Dallas is going to release him?
Well, I don't think the Cowboys will end up releasing him. A team is going to jump in — maybe at the last minute — with an offer to get Cooper before he hits the open market.
I think it would be in the Bears' best interest to jump ahead of those potential offers and lock this down now. I'd start with a 2022 fifth-round pick and 2023 sixth-round pick (since the Bears don't have a fourth-round pick this year) and go to a 2022 third-round pick only if necessary.
The odds of getting a wide receiver as talented as Cooper in the third or fourth round aren't high. Cooper is more valuable than any player the Bears could select with one of those picks.
Chicago is obviously in the middle of a major rebuild. But they still need talented players on the roster. And Cooper is a high-level player that would fill a need and would be relatively easy to acquire.
