The Dallas Cowboys wide receiver room is likely going to look somewhat different in 2022.
Michael Gallup and Cedrick Wilson are both going to be free agents in March. And it doesn't seem like the Cowboys are going to re-sign either of them.
There's also the possibility that Dallas releases Amari Cooper to clear some cap space (that would be a terrible idea, though).
The most likely scenario for this offseason is that Cooper and CeeDee Lamb enter the 2022 season as the Cowboys' top two options and then a third wide receiver is added via free agency or the draft.
On Monday, Dallas sports radio host Jeff Cavanaugh suggested that the third wide receiver in 2022 for the Cowboys should be Odell Beckham Jr, who will be a free agent when the league year officially ends next month.
This is a terrible idea for a myriad of reasons.
First off, what is the market for OBJ? He just tore his ACL in the Super Bowl. That's his second ACL tear in less than two years. The best-case scenario would have Beckham returning to the field in maybe December? And that's if everything in his recovery goes perfect. Is he looking for a short-term deal to prove himself again? Or does he want something long-term?
Beyond the ACL issue, there's the whole idea of having a personality as big as OBJ on the roster. I think he's been misunderstood at times, but there's no doubt that drama has followed the former LSU wide receiver over the years. Is an almost-30-year-old wide receiver with a major injury that invites drama worth taking a risk on?
I don't think so. There are other options for the Cowboys. Lamb and Cooper are more than talented enough to carry the load in the passing game. Dallas doesn't need OBJ.
The Cowboys should spend that cash elsewhere. OBJ would add very little if anything to the Dallas roster in 2022.
