PITTSBURGH – It was clear back in March that the Steelers planned on Mitch Trubisky to compete for the starting quarterback job, at minimum. Some even argued Trubisky would be the entrenched starter based on the amount of money –and incentives– included on his contract.

A lot of those arguments tempered down after the Steelers drafted Kenny Pickett with the 20th overall pick in the 2022 NFL Draft.

Naturally, the conversation then shifted to Trubisky's role in 2022, especially since Mike Tomlin was so adamant -and continues to be as such- about placing Trubisky, Pickett, and Mason Rudolph in a competition for the starting gig.

Typically, a veteran quarterback gets the benefit of the doubt during the offseason/preseason. Unless the rookie is No. 1 overall pick or there's some other special circumstance involved.

When it comes to the Steelers first day of OTAs, it was the former instead of the latter. Per Chris Adamski of the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review, Kevin Dotson, one of the Steelers' starting offensive linemen, told the media Trubisky was running with the 1s on Day 1.

Like Adamski notes, Dotson isn't Tomlin, Matt Canada, or even Mike Sullivan. However, it's pretty clear he knows what he is talking about.

"I would say [that 's] just for camp, but they've pretty much said it already that Mitchell [Trubisky] is No. 1," Dotson said via All Steelers Talk when asked how the offensive line prepares for three different starting quarterbacks.

Dotson was then asked who "they've" are in regard to the people he was referring to.

"The team. Team-wise, they pretty much made that decision."

Although it's largely unsurprising, the precedent has now been set when it comes to the Steelers' hierarchy at quarterback. Whatever change comes next -or if Trubisky continues to be the No. 1 guy- will certainly be something to monitor over the coming months.
