The Pittsburgh Steelers got some encouraging news on Wednesday.

Wide receiver Diontae Johnson, who is coming off of a career year that led to a Pro Bowl nod, injured his shoulder against the Detroit Lions in the Steelers' final preseason game. Fortunately, the former third-round pick was able to participate in practice, albeit on a limited basis.

Steelers head coach Mike Tomlin said that Johnson's availability for the season opener on Sunday against the defending AFC champion Cincinnati Bengals would be based on his practice participation. After giving it a go on Wednesday, Johnson seems to be headed in the right direction and he had this to say about his injury.

"I tried to do everything I could, what my arm will allow me to do," said Johnson. "I'm doing everything I can literally to try to get back to the guys this Sunday. I'm taking it one day at a time. We gonna see where it goes."

If Johnson can't go then veteran Chase Claypool and rookie George Pickens will have to step up.

Also, Marcus Allen, who was released last week and then signed back after safety Damontae Kazee was placed on injured reserve, is dealing with a hamstring issue. Allen is looked at as a layer that can play a hybrid linebacker/safety role for the Steelers so his availability will be something to monitor as well.
