The Dallas Cowboys continue to be attached to big names throughout the league. Especially big name play-makers who're on the oust with the team's they're currently on.
It's understandable. The Cowboys traded Amari Cooper in the off-season and let Cedrick Wilson walk in free agency. At the moment, Dalton Schultz is in the middle of a contract dispute and Michael Gallup continues his rehab. This is 226 catches, 2,720 yards and 24 touchdowns missing from this offense.
Most recently, it was San Francisco WR Deebo Samuel attached to trade rumors to Dallas. At the moment, it looks like those are dying down more and more, as SF continues to work on a long-term deal for Samuel.
However, another NFC West star WR is linked to the Dallas Cowboys. Thanks, in part, to NFL Network's Rich Eisen.
On his radio show, Eisen spoke on Seattle Seahawks WR DK Metcalf, who's in the middle of negotiating a potential contract extension, and why Jerry Jones and the Cowboys should pick up the phone.
"I do appreciate his star ability to make himself a figurative star wherever he goes, but the star on the side of that helmet. Thanksgiving days, Monday nights, Sunday nights."
Seahawks head coach, Pete Carroll doesn't seem to worried about the on-going negotiations. At the same time, isn't giving any real confidence in things being finalized.
"These are crucial weeks to get something done. We'll see what happens and hope that we can work something out. We really intended to get that done."
Is the loss of Russell Wilson enough for Metcalf to ask for Davante Adams-type money? Are the Seahawks willing to part with their star receiver to add to the rebuild? Would the Dallas Cowboys do another Amari Cooper trade and send a first, plus potential picks, for Metcalf's services?
While this doesn't seem like the splash move Stephen Jones and the front office would try to make, it makes sense. The losses of Cooper and Wilson will be felt, as well as the question of when/if Gallup and Schultz return are sure to impact the passing game.
At the moment, QB Dak Prescott has presumed WR1 CeeDee Lamb to throw the ball to. Along with rookie Jalen Tolbert, who's making flashes in OTA's, and players like TJ Vasher and rookie tight end Jake Ferguson.
While there's upside in this group, the addition of a Pro Bowl WR like Metcalf would put them back among the game's best. Metcalf has the 11th most receiving yards and fourth most touchdowns since 2019.
So what would it cost?
Metcalf is spoken about among the top 10-15 receivers in the game, some of which have been traded in the last few seasons. This sets the starting price to gain Metcalf.
- Tyreek Hill – a first and second round picks, two fourths and a sixth.
- Davante Adams – a first and second round picks.
- AJ Brown – a first round pick.
- Stefon Diggs – a first, fifth, sixth and seventh round picks.
If the Dallas Cowboys wanted Metcalf, it wouldn't be for a first, straight up, as Cooper cost. Any trade will start with a first and likely also include one or two extra draft picks.
In addition to finding trade value, and extension being done falls on Jones and the front office. Luckily enough, the Cowboys have made it their mission to secure cap space, and sit with the fourth most in the NFL.
There are 11 WR's whose average annual earnings are $20 million or more. With the Cowboys moving off of Cooper, and looking to extend Lamb down the line, extending Metcalf would need to be discussed.
His rookie deal ends next off-season and is sonly due $3.96 million this season. It wouldn't make sense for the Cowboys to trade away much of their future assets for a one-year rental. They've made that clear.
The fit for Metcalf in Dallas makes plenty of sense. He's a physical play-maker and would give the offense an additional weapon to stretch the field. He's not the route technician Cooper is, but would allow Prescott to take more chances down the field in double coverage. An area that's been missing from this offense.
It isn't entirely likely the Cowboys make another move for another receiver. They love Lamb, and believe in Gallup and Tolbert. If the front office wants to secure the group, a phone call makes sense.
If they're staunch on their team-building beliefs, this will fade just as the Deebo Samuel rumors… and the Jamal Adams rumors… and the Earl Thomas rumors… etc.
