The Chicago Bears had a chance to get back to .500 on Thursday night against the Washington Commanders, but several self-inflicted mistakes ended up being the difference in the 12-7 loss.
From muffed punts to ill-timed penalties to just bad execution – the loss had it all. And this isn't the first time Bears mistakes cost this team a game in 2022.
It's been a theme throughout the year.
Everyone knew there were going to be growing pains with a brand new front office, coaching staff, and an overhauled roster. But this is simply too many mistakes through the first six weeks of a season.
Something has to change. No one is saying fire everyone, but the Bears need to a long look at themselves during their mini-bye week.
According to head coach Matt Eberflus, that's the plan.
"We're going to reassess everything," Eberflus said after the game. "From scheme, to players, to everything. And we're gonna do a good job of that. And we're going to do a good job of really getting it to the players.
"If it might be a lineup change, it might be technique/fundamentals – all that. Scheme, how we're running certain plays, who we're getting the ball to, what we're doing well, [and] what we need to improve on. We're going to look at that for sure."
The Bears are currently 29th in offensive DVOA, per Football Outsiders. That overall ranking incudes the 30th-ranked passing offense and the 20th-ranked rushing offense. Defensively, the team ranks 18th in overall defensive DVOA, which includes the 15th-ranked pass defense and 25th-ranked rush defense.
And, they are tied for the sixth-worst turnover rate (-2) and have the 13th-most penalties.
In other words: Yea, everything needs to be looked at.
Whether or not things get fixed remains to be seen, but there's one thing that's clear moving forward: Eberflus and co. have a ton of work to do before they can start thinking about winning games on a consistent basis.
