Sure, there have been players like Tony Pollard, Ryan Switzer or Rico Dowdle who've had a long return in some capacity. However, due to an increased role on offense or a decreased role in the league, the Cowboys have been in need of some special team's speed.
Now, with the arrival of former USFL MVP and TCU Horned Frog KaVontae Turpin, the special teams has more Juice than Tupac.
While Turpin first took the NFL by storm with his electrifying preseason performance against the LA Chargers, team's
In fact, Turpin is so electric in his first season that he ranks in the top 10 in all major punt and kick return stats:
- 110 punt return yards: 7th
- 12.22 yards per punt return: 3rd
- Season long punt return of 28 yards: 8th
- 197 kick return yards: 7th
- 24.63 yards per kick return: 4th
- Season long kick return of 62 yards: 3rd
While Turpin has yet to take one all the way to the house, his value is stretching beyond return yardage.
His all-purpose yardage (310) places the Dallas Cowboys offense at or beyond their own 50 yard line after a return. Not counting touchbacks or kicks that are downed.
A complete returner the Cowboys haven't had since Dwayne Harris. It took him many hurdles to eventually get to the NFL but he's become a gem, in the form of lightning in a bottle.
At his current pace, he is likely going to smoke the Cowboys single-season punt (548) and kick (1,399) return yardage records.
