The Dallas Cowboys have up until July 15 to sign tight end Dalton Schultz to a long term deal. Otherwise, he will play the 2022 NFL season under the franchise tag, which is a fully guaranteed $10.9 million.

With the recent extension of Cleveland Browns TE David Njoku, it opens up the market ever further for Schultz. His four-year contract extension is worth up to $56.75 million, with $28 million guaranteed. Effectively raising Schultz's asking price.

Here's every tight end's yearly average amount on their contract:

  • George Kittle – $15,000,000
  • Travis Kelce – $14,312,500
  • Dallas Goedert – $14,250,000
  • David Njoku – $14,187,500
  • Mark Andrews – $14,000,000
  • Hunter Henry – $12,500,000
  • Jonnu Smith – $12,500,000
  • Mike Gesicki – $10.9 million (franchise tag)

Njoku has been a trade candidate for the past two seasons but has seemingly come back to earth. Finishing 2021 with his best statistical season since 2018 with 36 catches, 475 yards and four touchdowns. Also being heralded for his improved blocking ability. An area that has been criticized of him early in his career.

Compared to Schultz who has seen his stats increase over the last two seasons. Combining for 141 catches, 1,423 yards and 12 touchdowns, but has been criticized for his inconsistent blocking.

The Dallas Cowboys are currently attempting to sign Schultz to a long-term deal, but with no significant change, as of yet. It's possible Njoku's deal is just the starting point. With another franchise tagged TE, Mike Gesicki, also looking for an extension, the asking price is likely only to increase.

Schultz is already ranked among the best TEs in the game and will likely continue to see another increase in targets. With the losses of Amari Cooper, Cedrick Wilson, Blake Jarwin and Malik Turner, QB Dak Prescott is going to rely even more on his TE1.

If we see another Pro Bowl-level performance in 2022, Schultz could end up being talked about as the highest-paid player at his position. The Dallas Cowboys are hesitant to sign him to that kind of money now, but if he's in their future plans, signing him now will be cheaper than later.

Similar to how they went about the Dak Prescott contract. History doesn't need to repeat itself.
