Kansas City has been well known for the last four years (since the start of the Mahomes era) for having one of the best offenses in the NFL, while always having a bad or subpar defense. This last year, it almost seemed as if it was the other way around. Some people say the offense costs the Chiefs a super bowl visit.
However, Kansas City had a great defense in the second half of the season, but there are still some things that could be fixed, while the offense just needs some tweaks and adjustments. So, is it safe to say that Kansas City needs help on the defensive side of the ball? Yes, it is. And here is why.
The Kansas City Chiefs need defense through the draft
The Chiefs struggled the first part of the year on defense, and ultimately turned things around statistically. In my opinion, it was a product of a bad schedule that made the defense look great. What they were doing in the second half last year is not consistent.
That is the “why” in this conversation. The unbelievably easy schedule, featured the New York Giants, an Aaron Rodgers-less Packers team, The Las Vegas Raiders twice, the Broncos, and the Steelers. Of those games, they gave up no more than 17 points in a game and averaged only 15 points allowed in those games.
For the Chiefs, their offense is still good enough to beat teams on that side of the ball alone. If they were to improve their defense, which has a few different areas that could be improved, they would be a much better team.
When Kansas City started this last year terribly, there was talk about Steve Spagnuolo, the defensive coordinator, being fired. When they were struggling offensively, there was never any conversation about firing offensive coordinator Eric Bieniemy.
The Chiefs have one of the best interior linemen in the game in Chris Jones, and that cannot be argued. His playoff numbers (having one sack in his post-season career) aren't great. However, that is a product of being double-teamed. If they can bring in another player to help take that pressure off, the defense would be upgraded a ton.
The defense also has a young linebacker unit that has future stars in the making in Nick Bolton and Willie Gay Jr.. The focus in the draft would likely not be in that area. The Chiefs have an average corner back room and could be improved through this draft.
With all that being said, the Chiefs should still go get a few offensive weapons. However, they should focus primarily on the defensive side of the ball. The offense will be there no matter what, as long as Mahomes in quarterback
