Randy Gregory appeared to be re-signing with the Dallas Cowboys — until he wasn't.

In an unusual situation, Gregory went from reportedly agreeing to terms with the Cowboys to instead signing with the Denver Broncos.

It has been reported that the Cowboys attempted to change some language in the initial agreement. That, as a result, led to Gregory changing his mind. Now, the Cowboys have a hole that must be filled at defensive end.

Dallas will have options through free agency and in the draft. What route the team opts to take after the Gregory embarrassment will be fascinating.

WHERE THE COWBOYS CAN TURN

The Cowboys re-worked Demarcus Lawrence's contract to have cap room for Randy Gregory. Instead, the cap space is now available for Dallas to use on an outside defender.

Von Miller, Chandler Jones, Z'Darius Smith, Justin Houston, and Melvin Ingram are among the big-name EDGE rushers that are on the market. Miller, in particular, could be a possibility for the Cowboys.

For one, Miller is a native of the Dallas-Fort Worth Metroplex. He starred at DeSoto High School before playing his college ball at Texas A&M. Miller still has a house in the Metroplex.

Secondly, the Cowboys can sell the veteran pass rusher on playing alongside the likes of Micah Parsons and Demarcus Lawrence.

Those two, along with Gregory, formed one of the elite pass rushes in football last season. Adding a talent like Von Miller to Parsons and Lawrence would be downright scary.

Von Miller would be a great prize for the Dallas Cowboys after missing out on Gregory. However, the Cowboys will not be the only team looking to sign the three-time first-team All-Pro defender.

If the Cowboys strike out on Miller, prospects to target in the draft include:

  • David Ojabo, Michigan
  • George Karlaftis, Purdue
  • Arnold Ebiketie, Penn State

One thing is for certain: EDGE must be addressed with Gregory leaving town. Von Miller would be the gem of the crop, but the Dallas Cowboys must be prepared for all of the twists and turns in free agency and the draft.
