In case you missed it, the Dallas Cowboys re-signed wide receiver Michael Gallup over the weekend.
Gallup, who was set to hit free agency this offseason, inked a five-year deal with the Cowboys. The contract is worth $62.5 million total, giving Gallup an average of $12.5 million per year.
The full details of the deal were released Monday. After further review, the Cowboys inked its wideout to a team-friendly deal that will allow the team to have an out, if needed, pretty early in the contract.
Gallup signed for $27 million guaranteed — with nothing guaranteed after the 2023 season. Additionally, the Cowboys would only eat $4 million in dead money if the team decides to part ways with Gallup after the 2024 season.
Furthermore, by signing Gallup to an extension, the wide receiver carries just a $4 million cap hit this year. That, combined with other moves that the team has made, gives the Cowboys some flexibility to make some moves during the free agency period.
Dallas opted to sign Gallup over Amari Cooper, who was traded over the weekend to the Cleveland Browns. The Cowboys wanted to sign Gallup, Dalton Schultz, and others, rather than investing a big chunk of change into Cooper.
The news of Christian Kirk signing a large deal with the Jacksonville Jaguars on Monday points to the Cowboys getting a bit of a discount for Gallup. Kirk signed for a whopping $18 million per year with the Jags, much more than what Dallas is paying for Gallup.
All in all, this is a win for the Cowboys, all things considered. If things go south, the Cowboys have ways out of the contract. If Gallup balls out, Dallas will look smart for working out this kind of deal.
Now, Dallas needs to shift its focus to rounding outs its wide receiver corps alongside Gallup and CeeDee Lamb.
