The Steelers addressed the linebacker position in the NFL draft but didn't do so until the seventh round when they selected Mark Robinson out of Ole Miss. A reason for this strategy may have been because of who entered the Steelers facility back in March on a two-year deal, veteran Myles Jack.

Jack spent his first seven seasons with the Jacksonville Jaguars. He was released in March, making him the last member of the "Sacksonville" defense, a nickname given to the 2017 Jaguars that reached the AFC Championship Game. However, one analyst sees prosperous days ahead for the former second-rounder.

ESPN released a list of players who could have a career resurgence in 2022. When it came to the Steelers, the choice was Jack.

"Jack is the Steelers' steadiest inside linebacker through 2½ weeks of training camp. In the first padded practice, Jack blew up fullback Derek Watt in one of the final reps of backs-on-backers, and in team periods, he has shown a knack for shooting the gap and stopping the run. With Devin Bush coming off a roller-coaster season following a 2020 ACL tear, Jack is primed to lead the position group and revitalize the Steelers' run defense."

The last sentence is key. The Steelers led the NFL in sacks last season (55) in large part the All-Pro edge rusher T.J. Watt and league-leading 22.5 and All-Pro defensive tackle Cameron Heyward who added another 10. Pittsburgh was dreadful in another category, stopping the run. The Steelers were the worst in the league as they surrendered 146.1 yards per game, making their defensive unit a weird cocktail of good and bad.

In addition to the Steelers having a great pass rush they also have playmakers in the secondary. All-Pro safety Minkah Fitzpatrick spearheads the group, and cornerback Ahkello Witherspoon, who led the team in interceptions last season despite playing just nine games, is a solid complement. If Jack can elevate the Steelers' ability to stop the run, they will have a great chance of being good all-around as a defensive unit, which may need to lead the team as they enter a new era at quarterback with the retirement of Ben Roethlisberger.

Jack has put on display during training camp that he's an upgrade from what the Steelers had at linebacker, and the potential of what their linebacker group can be if it continues. Two weeks ago, Jack talked about what it meant to place the Steelers' colors on his back and the opportunity to play behind a formidable pass-rush.

“It was definitely a surreal moment to put on that Steelers black and gold for a second, but I’m getting comfortable in it. I love it man, it’s a great look,” Jack said via NFL Network. “It was a no-brainer for me [signing with the Steelers]. The d-line that they have, I get to play behind those guys. And then just the history behind a great football organization.”

But the best development that could come from Jack's addition is not just his resurgence – he could elevate the play of Bush, therefore, giving him another shot to be a starter in Pittsburgh or somewhere else in 2023.

Bush has never had a player as good as Jack next to him, so there's certainly a chance Jack could have a big impact on him.

Killing two birds with one stone, but in a good way, would help the Steelers defense get back to its dominating ways.
