The Dallas Cowboys and free agent offensive tackle Jason Peters are in the middle of negotiations. With the loss of Tyron Smith for the foreseeable future, the team is shuffling the offensive line. Needing to seek outside help.

Both sides met this past Thursday and Friday, but no new deal is yet signed. Despite all signs pointing to Peters becoming the newest member of the Cowboys, there's still an aura of pessimism when it comes to the front office.

If they are able to come to terms on a deal with Peters, it is going to be as a one-year fix. Peters is 40 years old but continues to play high quality football on the line.

But where would he play?

The Dallas Cowboys season opener against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers is only a week away, and the coaching staff may be content with their current starting lineup.

  • LT – Tyler Smith (rookie)
  • LG – Connor McGovern
  • – Tyler Biadasz
  • RG – Zack Martin
  • RT – Terence Steele

If they go this route, how the line looks after week one will indicate how Peters is used. Is he simply a swing tackle? Neither Josh Ball or Matt Waletzko have ever taken a real NFL snap.

Replacing one future Hall of Famer in Tyron Smith, for another in Jason Peters can have the same osmosis effect that Martin has continues to have with Biadasz and Steele. Aiding in protection, picking up blitzes and making life easier for these young left-side offensive linemen. Even though it likely means replacing one of them should they underwhelm.

Peters has starts at both left tackle and guard in his career. His versatility is key for QB Dak Prescott's health as well as finding out the best fit for Smith. He was drafted with the belief that he would takeover for Tyron one day, and is now getting first crack at the job.

If Smith, McGovern or possibly both struggle, the line will need to be re-shuffled. Again. Especially if Smith is a better option at left guard than McGovern, as he showed in training camp.

It's easy to simply plug and play Peters anywhere on the Dallas Cowboys offensive line. His ability to play tackle or guard gives the offense slight breathing room. Knowing there is a better option, who can easily come in for either spot.

First, the two sides need to come to terms on a deal. Afterwards, we can monitor practices and see where this offensive line looks its best.
