The New York Giants are in desperate need of a major splash after a dismal 2023 season. Fortunately, it's the perfect time of year to make as many splashes, as possible.
Free agency is only two weeks away and there will be plenty of playmakers on the open market, but what about trading for a dynamic playmaker?
Recently, former New York Jets GM Mike Tannenbaum suggested the Miami Dolphins trade Jaylen Waddle to the Kansas City Chiefs in exchange for All-Pro cornerback Trent McDuffie. Obviously, that idea was meant with a ton of scrutiny by Chiefs Kingdom, among others, because McDuffie is a core piece of a young secondary that has helped propel the Chiefs to back-to-back Super Bowls.
While, yes, that doesn't make sense for the Chiefs, it sparks the idea of whether or not other teams could offer something in return for Waddle.
Recently, Bookies.com put out a list of teams that could trade for Waddle and the New York Giants topped the list at +400, which is a 20% chance. The Giants are followed by the Carolina Panthers (+425), the Arizona Cardinals (+500), and sure enough, the Chiefs (+500).
This is mostly fodder – the Giants won't be able to trade for Waddle
If you look at the top favorites that also include the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, Jacksonville Jaguars, and Baltimore Ravens, it's clear these teams all have something in common: The need, or potential need, for a top receiver.
One typically doesn't want to underestimate Vegas, but this is a list betting on the most receiver-needy teams making a big move to get a guy.
It's simple: The Giants don't have the draft capital to trade for Waddle. They have just seven picks in the upcoming draft, two being second-rounders, and they need every single pick. Waddle is considered one of the most electric playmakers in the NFL and he's key to the Dolphins offense – Miami isn't going to let him go for peanuts.
If the Giants didn't have all the holes they have on the roster, then sure, a trade would make a lot more sense. Going after the proven player instead of gambling on the unknown is a much more sensible route, but the Giants don't even have the quarterback position completely settled – it's merely wait-and-see, which means they could easily be picking back in the top-10, again, in 2025.
Adding premium, costly talent to a team that is trying to simply survive at this point is a waste of resources. Stay the course, continue to build smart, and then make your move when you know you have more answers than questions.
And for bettors' sakes – don't take this prop.
