It's been a rough couple of seasons for Washington Commanders fans after going 26-40-1 during the Ron Rivera era.

But this offseason provides plenty of reasons for hope for a franchise that's looking for its first Super Bowl win in over 30 years.

The Commanders have the No. 2 pick in the 2024 NFL Draft. And they are at the top of the league in available cap space this offseason.

In other words, a lot can change for Washington this offseason — especially with a new general manager and head coach in place.

One thing that ESPN thinks will change for the Commanders in 2024 is the starting quarterback position.

ESPN thinks North Carolina Tar Heels quarterback Drake Maye will be Washington's starter in 2024, replacing Sam Howell, who also played at North Carolina.

Maye is projected as one of the top picks in the 2024 NFL Draft.

From ESPN: The Commanders lost their final eight games to move into the No. 2 slot in a quarterback-heavy draft, absolving them of the decision of whether to give Sam Howell another shot. Now they'll get a top quarterback prospect — perhaps UNC's Maye — without having to trade up and can keep Howell as a solid backup. Washington's stock is on the rise.

Howell still has plenty of potential as a quarterback — he's only started 18 games in the NFL. But he hasn't definitively proven that he's the answer in Washington. It would be awfully tough for the Commanders to pass up on a player as talented as Maye.
