The most likely scenario when it comes to who starts for the Pittsburgh Steelers at QB in 2024 starts and ends with Kenny Pickett.
And as we stand here today, Pickett is the only QB signed to the roster through the season, as Mason Rudolph is slated to hit free agency.
But following a new report from ESPN's Jeremy Fowler, the Steelers may be able to get a Super Bowl Champion at a steep discount:
Wilson to Pittsburgh?
"Everybody I’ve talked to around the league expects the Denver Broncos at some point around the new league year in the next few weeks to rip the band-aid off and release Russell Wilson even though they owe him $39 million in guaranteed money,” Fowler said on SportsCenter on Sunday. “But they can start new, he can go sign somewhere else. The feeling is he’ll sign for considerably less, maybe even the league minimum, because he’s got all that money in hand guaranteed. And so, he’s going to have options. The feeling I get from talking to teams and scouts is that he’s still an NFL starter, there will be a job somewhere for him.”
Now Wilson may come with some hoopla about his process or seem to be "too loud" for Pittsburgh's preferred taste at QB, but not if he's a backup.
Now some might say, "What makes you think he wants to be a backup?"
Well, he probably doesn't want to be, but I'm not sure how many teams are going to just promise Wilson a starting job at this point in his career after the last two seasons in Denver, hence the report about him taking the minimum.
And sure, maybe Wilson wins a camp battle and becomes the starter. I'm not saying that couldn't happen even in a place like Pittsburgh. But right now, Wilson makes sense for the Steelers given his cost and resume, but as a backup opposed to a starter.
