Justin Fields may have already played in his final game with the Chicago Bears.
Fields faces an uncertain future in Chicago. The Bears own the top selection in this year’s NFL Draft, and despite Fields’ promising finish to the 2023 season, all signs continue to point to team president Kevin Warren using the pick to bring in former USC quarterback Caleb Williams.
The Bears are not in a hurry to find a suitor for Fields. The third-year passer is under contract with Chicago for the 2024 season, and he also has a fifth-year option in his rookie contract. Still, there continues to be much speculation that Fields may soon be packing his bags, especially as he has been linked with teams such as the Pittsburgh Steelers as of late.
Sports Illustrated’s Albert Breer believes that Fields would fit right in with Pittsburgh because of his potential to shine in the Arthur Smith-led offense.
"In his time as an offensive coach with the Tennessee Titans, Smith was with Jake Locker, Marcus Mariota, and Ryan Tannehill," Breer wrote on SI.com. "With the Atlanta Falcons, the coach had Matt Ryan, Mariota and Desmond Ridder. So he’s built an offense, over the years, that’s adaptable to whatever type of quarterback he happens to have."
The Steelers hired Smith earlier this month to become their new offensive coordinator. As Breer touched on, Smith has worked with multiple quarterbacks over the years, and regardless of their play style, he has strived to get the best out of them on the field.
Breer added that Steelers head coach Mike Tomlin is "as wired into Ohio State as any coach in the NFL, save for the guys, like Mike Vrabel," so he would indeed "know what needs to be done to get the most out of him."
The wait is on for the Bears’ final call on Fields’ future with the team.
