The San Francisco 49ers' Super Bowl 58 loss to the Kansas City Chiefs will sting for a long time.
San Francisco's overtime defeat would be painful enough in isolation given the nature of it, but the agony is magnified because the Niners have gotten so close so often.
Indeed, the 49ers have reached at least the NFC Championship Game, progressing to the Super Bowl twice, in four of the last five seasons.
And their 25-22 loss to the Chiefs saw them join a select club they really didn't want to be a part of.
The Niners became only the sixth NFL franchise since the merger to appear in at least four conference title games in a five-year span and fail to win the Super Bowl.
They joined the Minnesota Vikings (1973-77), the Los Angeles Rams (1974-78), Dallas Cowboys (1978-82), Buffalo Bills (1988-92, 1983-93, 1990-94) and the Philadelphia Eagles (2000-04, 2001-05) on that list.
It is a reflection of both the 49ers' consistency and their misfortune in having their success coincide with the emergence of one of the greatest quarterbacks of all time in Patrick Mahomes, to whom they have now lost to twice in the Super Bowl.
Such statistics only add to the hurt the 49ers will feel for some time, and which won't truly dissipate until they are back on the field next season, looking to prove themselves as a member of the NFL's elite all over again.
