Baltimore Ravens quarterback Lamar Jackson took home the 2023 AP NFL MVP award earlier this month, and 17 executives from around the league agree with the final vote for the prestigious honor.
Sports Illustrated’s Albert Breer polled a total of 29 NFL executives to vote for seven awards, including the NFL MVP honor. Breer noted to all voters to not take into account the postseason when making their final pick for each award, but he did give them all the green light to "use it as context in choosing winners."
Jackson draws respect from NFL executives
Breer’s poll saw Jackson receive 17 out of 29 first-place votes for the NFL MVP award, with San Francisco 49ers running back Christian McCaffrey finishing in second place with six such votes.
It seems that many of the voters in this poll either brushed aside Jackson’s forgettable performance in Baltimore’s AFC title game loss to the Kansas City Chiefs, or they simply decided not to overlook his potent regular season campaign. From his 29 total touchdowns to standout performances in primetime games, Jackson had his way in regular season play.
In the vote for the NFL Offensive Player of the Year award, McCaffrey led the way with 11.5 first-place votes. Jackson finished right behind McCaffrey with 9.5 such votes.
Jackson and McCaffrey sure will enter next season among the favorites to win the NFL MVP and NFL Offensive Player of the Year awards.
