The Cincinnati Bengals wasted no time to give defensive assistant coach Jordan Kovacs a promotion to secondary/safeties coach. They were wise to move so hastily.
Per NFL Media's Mike Garafolo, the Bengals blocked Kovacs from interviewing with the Los Angeles Chargers before promoting him.
Had Kovacs interviewed well in L.A., he would've had a chance to work under head coach Jim Harbaugh, whom he previously worked under at Michigan several years ago.
Harbaugh has been busy building out his staff with his own connections. Greg Roman, the offensive coordinator from his time with the San Francisco 49ers, was hired to the same position, and Harbaugh convinced his defensive coordinator from Michigan, Jesse Minter, to take the same job in L.A. as well.
It's unclear what position Kovacs was in the running for under Harbaugh, but the safe bet would be a similar position to the one he just got with Cincinnati.
Kovacs made all the sense in the world to become the Bengals' next safeties coach. He played the position for three years in the NFL before entering the coaching world. He was previously the assistant linebackers coach over the past two seasons, which makes this a step up for the 33-year old coach.
The position Kovacs will be taking over matters quite a bit as well. The Bengals didn't get the production they wanted from their safeties last season and will be banking on further development from former first-round pick Dax Hill.
Kovacs will be directly responsible for that, so it's no wonder Cincinnati didn't let him go to the City of Angels.
Perhaps Kovacs will get an opportunity to take another promotion with Harbaugh's Chargers in the future. For now, he'll stick around in the Queen City to help where he's needed most.
