News broke on Friday night that Alabama Crimson Tide offensive coordinator Ryan Grubb is leaving Tuscaloosa to become the Seattle Seahawks' new offensive coordinator.

Grubb followed new Crimson Tide head coach Kalen DeBoer from Washington to Alabama last month.

According to The Seattle Times, this is a move that's actually been in the works for a little while. But the Seahawks waited to make the move official, in part, so the 30-day transfer window that opened at Alabama when Nick Saban retired could pass.

From The Seattle Times: Though the Seahawks had interest in Grubb from the start, one reason for waiting to make the hire official was to allow a 30-day window for Alabama players to enter the transfer portal to pass.

Nick Saban announced he was retiring as Alabama’s coach, opening a 30-day window. But the window passes Saturday.

The Seattle Times' Bob Condotta also pointed out that Grubb appeared at a booster function on Wednesday (National Signing Day) and told the attendees "I’m Ryan Grubb, I’m your new offensive coordinator.”

"One source had said following Grubb’s statement at Alabama that 'nothing had changed' in regard to Seattle’s pursuit of Grubb," noted Condotta in regards to Grubb's statement at the booster event.

If Condotta's report is accurate, it means Alabama essentially manipulated the system and misled players to keep anyone else from entering the transfer portal before the window closed. If any players decide they don't want to play for Alabama without Grubb as the offensive coordinator, they could still choose to transfer before the 2024 season. But they'll have to wait until the spring transfer window opens in April, which means they won't be able to go through spring practice with their new program.
