NFL free agency is less than three weeks away and the NFL Combine is next week. The Detroit Lions are going to be looking to fill holes in free agency, but we don't quite know what those are just yet. The Lions need to take Texas defensive tackle T'Vondre Sweat with the 61st pick
Pros: I've done a lot of detailing why Sweat would be a great piece for the Lions. The power that he brings as a run stopper and space eater is something this team could really use. Sweat has a lot of strength, but the athleticism is there as well. New Lions defensive line coach Terrell Williams worked with Sweat at the Senior Bowl and word around Mobile that week was that he was very impressed. The Lions can build off that relationship with this pick.
Cons: There's questions about his hand work and whether or not he can get into the right position fast enough to make him a truly dangerous pass rusher. The combine could answer a lot of questions about that.
Final word
The big question here is will Sweat be there with the 61st pick? He had a strong showing at the Senior Bowl and that rose his draft stock. If he has another strong showing at the combine next week, that should raise his stock again. If he does make it up to the first round, the Lions could maybe look at him there. This defensive line needs some help and Sweat is a guy that could hit the ground running in the NFL.
Safety has become a need for the Lions after the Tracy Walker release
The Detroit Lions released safety Tracy Walker on Tuesday after six seasons with the team. While Walker's play had declined and he was inactive throughout the playoffs, he provided something the Lions now don't have at safety, depth. There's a thought out there that the Lions are all set at safety, but as we sit […]
