Patrick Mahomes is now unquestionably among the greatest quarterbacks of all time. In just six full seasons as a starter, he has won three Super Bowls while claiming the Super Bowl MVP award in each.
And the Chiefs, who became the first team to win back-to-back titles since the New England Patriots in 2003-04, don't look like they're going to let up any time soon.
Naturally, folks are quick to want to compare greatness to greatness, and that didn't stop on Sunday night after the Chiefs' 25-22 overtime win over the San Francisco 49ers. Mahomes was asked on the NFL Network after the game about whether he hears the comparisons with former Patriots and Tampa Bay Buccaneer quarterback Tom Brady, who has seven Super Bowl championships.
"Yeah, I hear it," Mahomes said. "To me, it's always going to be tough because Brady beat me in the Super Bowl. That's one thing he'll always have over my head, but it gives me something to strive for every single day. Chasing greatness. Whenever I'm tired and I know I don't want to work out, I know that I have to do it in order to be in moments like this."
Mahomes, of course, is talking about the Buccaneers' 31-9 triumph over Mahomes and the Kansas City Chiefs in Super Bowl LV in Tampa. Brady completed 21 of 29 attempts for 209 yards with three touchdowns while earning Super Bowl MVP honors. Conversely, Mahomes completed 26 of 49 attempts for 270 yards with two interceptions. The loss is Mahomes' only one in four Super Bowl appearances.
Brady also managed to get the better of Mahomes and the Chiefs during the latter's breakout season in 2018. Brady led three go ahead/winning touchdown drives in the fourth quarter and overtime combined as the Patriots won 37-31 to earn a berth in Super Bowl LIII.
Brady's seven Super Bowl titles will be hard for anyone to ever run down, even for Mahomes, who's almost halfway there through just six full seasons.
However, it sounds like the loss to Brady and the Buccaneers will keep #15 for Kansas City fully motivated for the chase.
