Just hours before the Kansas City Chiefs celebrate their Super Bowl LVIII win with a parade through downtown Kansas City, they've made an announcement that will have fans celebrating another big win.
The team's official Twitter (X) account announced on Wednesday, that Chiefs DC Steve Spagnuolo had been signed to a contract extension. The 64-year-old coach has spent the past five seasons as the defensive coordinator in Kansas City, winning three Super Bowl rings since his arrival in 2019. He's the only defensive coordinator in NFL history to have won four Super Bowl championships. Spags replaced former defensive coordinator Bob Sutton after the team's defeat in the AFC Championship Game in the 2018-19 NFL season.
The Chiefs had some sense of urgency to get an extension done as Spags coached the 2023 NFL season absent an extension in the final year of his deal. Spags was the architect of a brilliant Chiefs defense in 2023, one that will go down in history as a defense that allowed 25 or fewer points 20 times. No other team has accomplished that feat in league annals.
Spagnuolo has expressed interest in returning to a head-coaching opportunity if one presents itself. He was the head coach of the St. Louis Rams from 2009-2011. However, for now, he'll remain in Kansas City.
Expect that Spags' extension will run parallel to an extension for Chiefs HC Andy Reid and GM Brett Veach. It's yet another sign that this team is committing to continuity for the future.
