No one, not even Cincinnati Bengals fans, can deny how impressive it's been to see Patrick Mahomes lead the Kansas City Chiefs to another Super Bowl despite having an underwhelming receiving corps. A year filled with drops and boneheaded mistakes from his wide receivers has not stopped him from being 60 minutes away from another Lombardi Trophy.
Mahomes is dangerous enough on his own. What if he was surrounded by any receiver from past and present he could want?
What if, dare I say it, Ja'Marr Chase was one of his receivers? That's not something that came out of thin air, it's where Mahomes' own mind went to Monday night.
During Opening Night of Super Bowl week, Mahomes was asked by 11-year-old NFL Network reporter Jeremiah Fennell to pick three wide receivers not currently on the Chiefs from an all-time draft pool.
Mahomes went with Randy Moss, Tyreek Hill, and Chase.
The spotlight is nothing new to Mahomes, who's going through his fourth Super Bowl week in five years. He's used to answering questions like these. The best answers are not only honest, but have layers to them.
Moss is an obvious choice. He's arguably the greatest wideout of all-time outside of Jerry Rice. Mahomes would also remember Moss well from growing up rather than Rice, who had his prime before Mahomes was born.
Hill and Chase are clear picks from the active pool, but Mahomes earned himself some credit by picking a former teammate who left his team, and an adversary who hasn't said nice things about his team.
Chase hasn't hid his emotions towards the Chiefs. His pick for the Super Bowl before the playoffs even started was, "Anybody but the Chiefs."
Chase is one of the best receivers playing right now, but Mahomes could've gone in other directions. Justin Jefferson, CeeDee Lamb, or A.J. Brown would've all made sense along with Hill. He decided to pay respect to a deserving rival.
It's a smart move on Mahomes' part, earning him good graces for taking two separate high roads at the same time. But also, who wouldn't want Hill and Chase running routes for them? Not one we can think of.
