The NFL talks a lot about player safety and the Super Bowl matchup between the Kansas City Chiefs and San Francisco 49ers will feature new helmets for a couple of specific position groups that are aimed at reducing the risk of head injuries.

More specifically: concussions.

"It's not just concussions, which are basically the same, within the last three or four years since some of our major changes," NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell told reporters on Monday night. "We keep looking at that. This year, we'll have, I believe it's eight new position-specific helmets – we'll see a couple on Sunday. That will be a big advancement in technology. We've always said, that will be part of our future [and] I think that will be helpful…

"… The Guardian Cap, again, had a 50% reduction in concussions, for the players who wore it in training camp. And that has a carryover into the regular season. Because if they get into the regular season, and particularly later in the season healthier, that's going to ultimately lead to less injuries. So, a lot of progress, but a lot more work to do."

It'll be interesting to see what these helmets look like and just how much they'll protect the players, which is obviously the most important objective. We'll know soon, sure enough.
