Remember in 2022 when Kentucky players were chirping about "real football" before their game against the Tennessee Vols?

Tennessee's players and coaches took it personally and made Kentucky pay for their comments, defeating the Wildcats 44-6 in front of a sold out crowd at Neyland Stadium.

(At one point during the game, the Vols went on a 15-play drive — which ended with a touchdown run by Princeton Fant — that featured mostly running plays. They beat Kentucky at their own game on that drive.)

Former Vols OL Gerald Mincey throws shade at Tennessee's style of offense

Former Vols offensive lineman Gerald Mincey transferred to Kentucky last month. And he already appears to be adopting the Wildcats' "real football" mentality.

Mincey recently met with reporters at Kentucky and he appeared to throw some shade at the offense that he played in for two seasons at Tennessee.

"I don't have to run hurry-up anymore, so I won't be out breath," said Mincey when asked about the difference in offenses. "But I like this offense. It's getting me ready for the NFL. Using NFL terminology, more of a pro-style offense. I can really show my versatility with outside zone, inside zone, instead of just what we did at Tennessee, which was just insert and hurry-up offense, tempo offense."

This is the same narrative that national draft analysts and opposing coaches have pushed for the last couple of years — that Tennessee's offense doesn't prepare players for the NFL.

And it's just not accurate. Mincey should know that as well as anyone. After all, he played alongside Darnell Wright in 2022 at Tennessee. Wright was selected with the No. 10 overall pick in the 2023 NFL Draft and had a terrific rookie season with the Chicago Bears.

Mincey's continued war of words with Tennessee (which is one-sided to this point) has been an odd development this offseason. All he's doing is providing his former teammates with plenty of motivation for next season's matchup between the Wildcats and the Vols. And I'm not sure that's a wise idea.
