Kansas City Chiefs HC Andy Reid provided several key injury updates before the start of the team's official practice week ahead of Super Bowl LVIII against the San Francisco 49ers.
He spoke on Jerick McKinnon, Joe Thuney and even provided an update on WR Kadarius Toney. Unfortunately, the news he had to share isn't what Chiefs fans are going to want to hear.
Jerick McKinnon's IR return is unlikely to lead to a return to the field
The Chiefs designated RB Jerick McKinnon to return from injured reserve last week. While reports coming out since then haven't ruled out McKinnon's return for Super Bowl LVIII, Andy Reid doused fans with cold water on Tuesday.
"Jerick (McKinnon) is not practicing," Reid said. "I'd tell you it's slim for him to be out there (in the Super Bowl)."
McKinnon isn't likely to practice this week, let alone play in the game per Reid. That means he won't get a chance to face his former team in the Super Bowl, just like injured DL Charles Omenihu. It also means the coaching staff won't get a chance to repay his brilliance in Super Bowl LVII, where he sacrificed personal glory to ensure a Chiefs win.
All-Pro LG Joe Thuney is a longshot for the Super Bowl
As for Joe Thuney, Andy Reid explained exactly what the issue with his injury is that prevents him from returning to practice and potentially playing in Sunday's game.
"Yeah, Nate (Taylor), it's strength," Reid said of Thuney's situation. "Just making sure that he's in a position that he doesn't get hurt or worsen what he's got. That's what we look at."
As for whether the All-Pro will practice and play this week, Reid seemed just as unsure as Thuney did during opening night.
"Eh, we'll see," Reid said and shrugged. "I think it's a long shot (for him to practice and play), yeah."
That lack of confidence is not great with the practice week already upon the team. It's certainly a change in tone from what Reid said just last week.
Kadarius Toney's fate rests in the hands of Andy Reid
Chiefs WR Kadarius Toney hasn't played in the last six games due to a combination of hip, ankle, and personal reasons. The coaching staff has been quite mum about his status for Super Bowl Sunday. Reid is still up in the air about whether Toney will be active following a viral Instagram rant that has been a big point of conversation leading up to the big game.
"Yeah, we'll see how it goes," Reid said of Toney. "He's been practicing and we'll just see whether he's up or not."
One thing that could work in Toney's favor is special teams. Dave Toub knows how dynamic Toney can be as a return man. He had the longest punt return in Super Bowl history just last year. That could be his saving grace in terms of whether he'll be made active this week, but I'd be surprised if he gets many chances to touch the ball on offense.
Chiefs DT Chris Jones won’t have a chance to earn his biggest contract incentive in Super Bowl LVIII
Kansas City Chiefs DT Chris Jones won’t have the same financial motivations in Super Bowl LVIII against the San Francisco 49ers as he’s had in recent games.
