The New York Jets might be looking at the next Brock Purdy. Or at least, they might have the chance to in April and it’s all thanks to an offensive lineman you probably forgot about.

Brock Purdy was famously drafted 262nd overall by the San Francisco 49ers with the last pick of the NFL Draft in 2022. The last pick in the draft is lovingly nicknamed “Mr. Irrelevant” as the last player taken.

The young quarterback out of Iowa State did not play like he belonged being 262nd and now has his team in the Super Bowl against arguably the best quarterback of this generation in Patrick Mahomes.

According to Overthecap.com it looks like the New York Jets will end up with the last pick of the 2024 NFL Draft. The Jets will receive three seventh-round compensatory picks in the upcoming draft, according to Over the Cap’s projection. The NFL uses a complicated formula based on free-agent losses and gains to determine compensatory picks.

For each draft, the NFL awards at least 32 additional picks for certain players, coaches and executives who depart from their previous teams. You are more than welcome to try and figure out how the picks are distributed by checking out the CBA or reading this, but for now, I will trust the good people over at Over the Cap.

If the formula holds up the Jets will be the last team on the clock this season thanks to guard Dan Feeney, who was signed by the Miami Dolphins last offseason. He was later traded to the Chicago Bears. They will also get seventh round compensatory picks because of the losses of Mike White and Nate Herbig.

The Jets have never had a "Mr. Irrelevant" pick in the post-merger era (since 1970).

Mr. Irrelevant Isn’t Always Irrelevant

Brock Purdy is by far the most successful Mr. Irrelevant so far in NFL history, but he isn’t the only one to make an impact on the team that drafted him.

In 2009, the Kansas City Chiefs drafted kicker Ryan Succop out of the University of South Carolina. Succop went on to earn the starting job for the Chiefs. Succop kicked for 14 years in the NFL with Chiefs, Tennessee Titans and Tampa Bay Buccaneers where he won a Super Bowl.

Tae Crowder was the last pick in the 2020 NFL Draft by the New York Giants. The former Georgia linebacker was a part of the Giants defense where he started 31 games for New York.

While I don’t imagine the Jets will find their next quarterback or their starting left tackle at pick 256 in this April’s draft, it is still a draft choice that could make a difference to the team in 2024 and beyond.

Jets Offseason Road Map: Three players that have to go

After another heartbreaking year and extending their North American sports leading playoff drought to 13 seasons, it’s time for the Jets to focus on the offseason. The Jets won’t be looking at any major changes to the coaching staff, so they will be focused solely on the draft and NFL free agency to finally end […]
