Zach Orr’s first season as defensive coordinator for the Baltimore Ravens will come with quite high expectations.
Orr takes over for Mike Macdonald, who was recently hired as the new head coach of the Seattle Seahawks. Macdonald served as Ravens defensive coordinator over the past two seasons, and his final campaign in Baltimore was one for the ages. The Ravens led the NFL in a multitude of stats in the regular season this year, from points per game allowed (16.5) to total sacks (60).
Orr is not planning to make drastic scheme changes to Baltimore’s defense this year. As he touched on during his introductory press conference on Tuesday, Orr wants to instead "build on" Macdonald’s defensive scheme.
"We definitely want to build on that," Orr said. "That’s a scheme that we helped build here for years. It’s been a scheme in making. … Like I said, we’re always looking to get better. That’s why you’ve seen great defenses here in the past. That’s what we have to do to continue.
"You have to look at yourself and look at how you can improve and how you can make that better, and on top of that, staying in front of what’s next. We know it’s going to be something that offenses going to get together and try to present to us new this year. We’re trying to stay in front of that, but that’s part of the process."
From mixing up coverages to the heavy use of simulated pressure, the Ravens under Macdonald emerged as a force to be reckoned with. Now, Orr will be called on to pick up just where Macdonald left off at.
Zach Orr’s bold take on Ravens defense will put the rest of the AFC on notice
Old-school defense.
