Cowboys must avoid this mistake if they're at all serious about going 'all-in' in 2024 offseason

The Dallas Cowboys claim they're going "all-in" ahead of the 2024 NFL season after their early playoff exit against the Green Bay Packers and now we wait to see if they back it up.

There are many ways they could go about it but a major one would be to avoid a major mistake at linebacker.

The Cowboys need one (or two) quite badly. With Dan Quinn gone to the Washington Commanders, it's likely the position will take a more traditional look with Markquese Bell playing safety instead of linebacker and the defense adding more size at the second level.

However, the Cowboys absolutely can't wait until April to address this top need. Specially so because this isn't a draft class with a deep linebacker group.

A to Z Sports' own Destin Adams had boots on the ground in Mobile, Alabama, last week at the Senior Bowl and one of his biggest takeaways from the week was precisely that LB is one of the positions viewed poorly in the draft.

"One scout spoke on the LB position and this year's class by saying, "It's different for every team, but if we are drafting an LB inside the first two days of the draft, we have to believe there's a chance he can play significant snaps during his rookie season. And in this class, there are only 2, maybe 3, that fall in that category for us."

That certainly doesn't sound promising for a team that could also be looking at offensive line and other positions in the early rounds of the Draft. And chances are whoever they could take at 24th overall this year wouldn't exactly be a plug-and-play type player.

Cowboys need to take care of LB position in March, not April

Additionally, even if it was a deep class of LB prospects, the optimal way to go about team building is to handle major needs in free agency and then focus on grabbing the best players available in the NFL Draft.

In March, the Cowboys are going to have solid options in free agency. They could take a home run swing at Patrick Queen from the Baltimore Ravens, who is expected to be the top LB in the market. But Seattle Seahawks' Jordyn Brooks could also be an "all-in" type target.

Queen is projected by A to Z Sports to land $18.2 million per year and Brooks $9.5 million.

There's also Frankie Luvu ($12 M per year projection), Lavonte David, Azeez Al-Shaair, and maybe this is the year they finally land Bobby Wagner!
