Ohio State is going in a different direction with its offense in 2024. While much of it remains on the table, one thing is for certain.
Ryan Day confirmed on National Signing Day that he would be giving up offensive play calling for the Buckeyes. Ohio State has hired Bill O’Brien to be the offensive coordinator, but he is in talks to become the head coach at Boston College, according to multiple reports.
Still, the hope is that O’Brien will be calling plays in Columbus in the fall.
"At Ohio State, we're chasing that 1 to 2 percent," Day said regarding the hiring of O’Brien. "For me to be able to hand over a lot of the duties that I was doing, I was looking for someone that had a great background in the NFL, in the SEC. He had a great background as a former head coach."
O’Brien has been hired by Bill Belichick twice and called plays in Nick Saban for the 2021-2022 seasons.
“I wasn’t going to make this decision and say, ‘Well, we’re just going to go in this direction’ and then just throw somebody into that role. It has to be the right person. And I felt like after spending a lot of time on it, Bill [O’Brien] was that right guy for that spot at that time.”
Now, taking the back seat to playcalling will allow Day to have a more ‘CEO’ role with the Buckeyes. It may be just what the doctor ordered for things to shift in the direction that Ohio State needs. Perhaps it can change the current 0-3 losing streak against Michigan.
“But I do think having somebody else call the game will allow me to take a little bit of a step back and I can see things from a bit of a wider lens. Okay, how is it going with the defense? Special teams? Overall? Kind of step back a little bit and have kind of a different perspective.”
If O’Brien isn’t the guy and leaves for Boston College, Ohio State will have to figure out who is going to call plays. Maybe that guy is Brian Hartline, who is the co-offensive coordinator. Otherwise, Ohio State may be looking toward an outside hire again. It’ll be the second one in a short time.
