One of the biggest stories in the NFL this offseason surrounds Minnesota Vikings wide receiver Justin Jefferson and his looming contract extension.
Jefferson is the best wide receiver in the NFL. Over the first 60 games of his career, he has 392 receptions for 5,999 receiving yards and 30 receiving touchdowns (he also has a rushing touchdown).
Insane production for a player that's still only 24 years old (Jefferson turns 25 in June).
Jefferson, who is entering the final year of his rookie contract (2024 is his fifth year option), is almost certainly going to receive a contract extension from the Vikings. The only questions are when will he receive it and how much will it be worth.
The former LSU star obviously wants to get paid, but he's willing to be patient — to an extent.
Jefferson joined Pro Football Talk at the Super Bowl in Las Vegas this week and he was asked about waiting on the extension.
"I will always continue to be myself, I will always continue to play the game the way I know how to play it," said Jefferson. "And I will always give my all out there on that field. I know the money's going to come. I know the contract is going to come. I'm just going to be waiting patiently."
"It kind of gets frustrating at some point," added Jefferson when asked if his patience will run out at some point. "Just with all I have done for the organization….of course I know I'm still early in my rookie contract. But no one has done what I've done. I'm just excited to be a part of the organization. And hopefully they feel I'm valuable enough to give me — it doesn't matter the amount of zeroes. I just want to play football and want to be part of an organization that values me and wants me there."
"I know that it's a business, I know they have money in their pockets that they're trying to keep," continued Jefferson. "But I know the value that I have. I know what I bring to the table for this team."
Jefferson doesn't sound like a player that's eager to hold out (though it's too early to speculate if that will be a scenario that arrives in the summer), but you never know what could happen when agents get involved.
Ultimately, this extension is something that will probably get done before there's too much drama. Jefferson isn't the type of player that can be replaced. He's one of one and everyone in Minnesota knows that.
