A primary need for the Los Angeles Rams in the 2024 offseason is an edge rusher.
One of the names that has floated around for a few months is Carolina Panthers edge rusher Brian Burns. He is a free agent but remains a threat to be franchise-tagged and remain in Charlotte.
So, if Burns is off the table for the Rams, ESPN projects Danielle Hunter as the next best option.
"The Rams have money to spend in free agency, and filling the edge rushing need should be a priority," ESPN's Matt Bowen wrote. "Hunter's 16.5 sacks with the Vikings in 2023 were the fifth most in the league, and he also forced four fumbles. Adding Hunter would give the Rams a productive veteran force opposite Byron Young – who had eight sacks as a rookie – with Aaron Donald on the interior. That's how you upgrade a pass rush."
What Hunter lacks in youth, he makes up for in production. He may be a better option than Burns, who struggled through a down 2023 season as contract discussions loomed overhead.
At 29, Hunter won't be around as long as Burns will. But he is still in the relative prime of his career.
A to Z Sports has him ranked the No. 9 free agent. He is projected to garner a three-year, $67.5 million contract. That number works out as the Rams have money to spend.
"Hunter consistently makes quarterbacks uncomfortable while also playing the run at a high level," writes A to Z Sports. "He is a force multiplier for any defense that is looking to upgrade their pass rush."
Solving the pass rush riddle won't be cheap for the Rams. But if Burns falls flat, Hunter, as a backup plan, is the next best option.
